“And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
Jonah 1:17 (ESV)

Jonah certainly needed rescuing. But it was from more than just the belly of the fish. God is the one who brought the fish! Jonah needed to be rescued from himself. From his determination to shut God out and his pursuit of self-directed living. At the moment it seemed his life was over and all hope was lost, Jonah cried out and the Lord rescued him.

That's what He does with us too. When we throw our hands up in the air and acknowledge our desperate need for Him, God does great work in our lives. He strengthens us in our weakness. He comforts us through our affliction. He brings salvation from death. And we are rescued.
