Passage: Jonah 4:1-11

It was a miracle: The People of Nineveh expectantly repented! But Jonah became angry at their salvation. He had seen their moral bankruptcy and despised them. He felt they deserved destruction. He saw them as sinners, but in his harshness and self-righteousness, he did not see himself as a sinner. His angry reaction to the salvation of the Ninevites showed little regard for God and too much regard for himself. Ever felt that way?

An improper understanding of the doctrine of sin will always erode compassion. God sees our sin and in His boundless love and compassion, provides a way out (1 Tim. 2:1–4). “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” (Rom. 5:8). Grasping the effects of sin in the human soul helps us grow in the compassion that reflects the heart of God in rescuing us from ourselves!
