Key Scriptures: Genesis 17; Luke 1:26-38

“You’re going to have a son!” The announcement of birth given to Sarah and Mary both seemed incredible and impossible. The servants of the Lord visited Abraham and Sarah as they were on their way to Sodom, when they announced the birth of Isaac. Sarah, who was in her 90’s, laughed and said, "This thing cannot be. It is beyond belief." And later Mary raised question about the virgin birth of Jesus. When the angel made the announcement, she asked, "How can this be, seeing I know not a man?" (Luke 1:34). Sometimes, God’s word heralds truths and promises to us that we think are ridiculous. We might contest, “God has promises for me?” “I can have peace amidst these trials?” “Psh, the bible says that?” But, it’s true. God has promises specifically for believers to cling to as we walk a life of godliness. God’s promises always point us to Jesus. Like Sarah and Mary, God calls us to trust in the Lord with all our heart, and lean not on our own understanding. And in all our ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight our paths. (Proverbs 3:5–6)
