The people of Israel had returned from captivity and had been living in the land for quite some time. Upon their return, they had expected a restoration of Israel’s glory that surpassed even the best days of David and Solomon. But the glory never came. In his scathing rebuke of the nation, the prophet Malachi uncovered the heart of Israel’s problem: their relationship with God had grown cold. And the worst part was that the Israelites never noticed the temperature change. Before the Israelites could expect an outpouring of God’s blessing, they needed to learn how to worship. From Malachi, we learn that how we relate to God affects every aspect of our lives, and until worship becomes as integral to our lives as breathing, we will not stop gasping for air.
