Carol Lavallee's Story
I lost my faith in God July 18th, 2002 when an accident killed my oldest son at the age of 35. I felt like God could have saved him if he wanted and blamed God for his death. One day I heard God tell me, “You asked for a child. I gave you one but did not say how long you would have him.” Sometime later I began to look for a church and one Sunday I attended the Battlefield campus. I fell in love, joined the church and began helping with baptisms. I failed at several attempts to start Bible study groups, probably for not trying harder. I even went around my neighborhood to see who would be interested. Many said yes but no one showed up, so I gave up trying.
I moved to the Buchanan campus when it opened. I volunteered to help with the First Impressions Team (FIT) and later to host a group. I and two other ladies began meeting on Wednesday mornings on campus. For a year, we studied and had lunch together. I prayed constantly asking God to bring more ladies to our group. This time He answered with four more ladies! We have become a cohesive group and work well together.
We decided to serve our community by supporting both Whitworth Buchanan and John Price Elementary. We help fill backpacks for the weekend food program, and have helped with their festivals and Fun Run events, as well as seeking outside community support for the teachers. Currently, we’re working with the schools hoping to provide Christmas gifts for several children. The schools are overwhelmed with our willingness to help and we love doing it!
I don’t know where that shy Carol went but I know that God has walked with me in every effort. I can’t thank Him enough or sing His praises more. God has worked in our group during illness, death, and surgeries. I love God and our group so much I’m overwhelmed at times with His goodness.
